🔍 Why Do We Work?
For many, work is just a way to pay the bills. But in the Christian worldview, work is much more: It is a divine calling embedded in creation.
In Genesis 2:15, God places humanity in the garden “to work it and take care of it.” Work was part of God’s good design before the Fall.
📖 Work as a Calling (Vocation)
The reformer Martin Luther taught that vocation means “calling.” He believed that farmers, bakers, parents, and merchants all serve God in their daily tasks, just as much as clergy do.
Our jobs are not simply tasks for survival—they are opportunities to serve neighbors and glorify God.
As 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
🌍 Sacred vs. Secular Professions?
Many assume that pastors and missionaries have “holy” jobs, while others do “normal” work. But the Christian worldview rejects this sacred-secular divide. Every legitimate profession belongs to God.
Abraham Kuyper declared, “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of human existence over which Christ does not cry, ‘Mine!’”
⚒️ Work as a Tool for Kingdom Impact
Work is not just about personal success—it’s a way to bring God’s values into the world. Integrity, creativity, justice, compassion, and collaboration are all reflections of His character.
A teacher shares truth. A cook serves with beauty and order. A designer reveals the harmony of creation.
Tim Keller said, “Work is the form in which we love our neighbor and fulfill God’s purposes for the world.”

⚠️ A Final Challenge
Work can become a place of worship—or an idol. When we chase performance and comparison, we risk serving success instead of God.
God cares not just about what we do—but why and how we do it.
